A Brief History of Bhutan
In 1616, spiritual leader Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel united Bhutan, laying the foundation for its identity and government. The Wangchuck Dynasty began in 1907 with King Ugyen Wangchuck. His son, Jigme Wangchuck, was followed by King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, and in 1974, Jigme Singye Wangchuck became the youngest king at 17. In 2006, his son, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, succeeded him.
Bhutan, nestled between China and India, is a small Himalayan kingdom known as the Land of the Thunder Dragon. Its 71% forest coverage, rich biodiversity, and breathtaking landscapes make it a natural wonder. The country prioritizes Gross National Happiness (GNH), focusing on environmental preservation and cultural well-being over economic growth. About 60% of Bhutanese live in rural areas and rely on agriculture, with strong respect for cultural traditions, including introducing television and the internet only in 1999.
